Lead Fiber Optic Technician – Data Center Project
We are hiring an experienced Lead Fiber Optic Technician for a large-scale data center project in Spartanburg, SC.
The ideal candidate has strong experience with fiber optic installation in data center, mission-critical, telecommunications, or large-scale structured cabling environments and is comfortable providing field leadership while working alongside the crew.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead and work alongside fiber optic technicians performing installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting
- Coordinate daily fiber installation activities and help assign work based on project priorities
- Install, route, secure, terminate, label, and test single-mode and multimode fiber optic cabling
- Install backbone, trunk, horizontal, and structured fiber systems within the data center environment
- Read and interpret construction drawings, cable run lists, pull plans, fiber matrices, cable schedules, and project specifications
- Verify installations meet project requirements, labeling standards, and quality expectations
- Perform and oversee fiber testing and troubleshoot failed tests, damaged fiber, connectivity issues, and installation defects
- Conduct quality checks and help ensure completed work is ready for inspection and turnover
- Coordinate with field engineers, supervisors, project managers, and other trades
- Track installation progress and communicate field conditions, production issues, and material needs to project leadership
- Maintain accurate cable, testing, labeling, and project documentation
- Provide direction, training, and support to less-experienced fiber technicians
- Help identify and resolve field conflicts before they impact production or schedule
- Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project standards
- Utilize construction management and project documentation tools such as Procore and PlanGrid when required
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of fiber optic, structured cabling, telecommunications, or related low-voltage installation experience
- Strong hands-on experience with fiber optic installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting
- Previous experience leading technicians, crews, or field installation activities
- Experience working with single-mode and multimode fiber optic systems
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, cable schedules, fiber matrices, pull plans, and technical documentation
- Strong understanding of fiber routing, termination, labeling, testing, and quality-control requirements
- Ability to troubleshoot fiber installation issues and failed test results
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to provide field direction while remaining hands-on with the installation
- Commitment to safety, quality, productivity, and professional workmanship
- Ability to work independently and make field-level decisions when necessary
Previous data center, mission-critical, telecommunications, or large-scale structured cabling experience is strongly preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- BICSI Installer or Technician certification
- FOA fiber optic certification
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Manufacturer-specific fiber certifications such as Corning, CommScope, Panduit, or similar
- Previous Lead Fiber Technician or crew leadership experience
- Experience working in hyperscale or large data center environments
- Experience with OTDR, power meter, light source, and other fiber testing equipment
- Procore experience
- PlanGrid experience
- Experience with large-scale backbone and trunk fiber installations
